Westchester : Taking a bite out of crime

In April 2005, the Westchester Police Dept retired our first police K-9 after 6 1/2 years of service. K-9 Horand is enjoying his retirement with his handler, Sgt Mike O'Hagan and his family.

In May 2005 the Westchester Police Department purchased a new Police K-9. "K-9 Brix" was purchased through the Northern Michigan Police K-9 training center in Harrison Michigan where he trained with his new handler Sgt O'Hagan.

Brix is a 2yr old pure-bred Male German Shepherd, born in the Czech Republic where he was trained as a dual-purpose "SOCIAL" police service dog. Brix receives all of his commands in Czech language from his handler.

Brix has been trained in:

Narcotics Detection
Obedience
Building Searches
Article Searches/Evidence Recovery
Tracking Suspects or Lost Persons
Handler Protection
Suspect Apprehension

Brix receives his police badge today star # 123-3/4, and will be recognized as an Official Police Service Dog for the Village of Westchester, which allows for criminal charges against anyone who may injure or tease his during his course of service.

Brix has already been utilized several times in his first 2 weeks on the job, including locating a subject with felony warrants who ran from police last week.

The K-9 team is an active member of the Illinois Police Work Dog Association ( www.ilpwda.com ), The North American Police Work Dog Association (www.napwda.com) , and Dogs Against Drugs/Dogs Against Crime ( www.daddac.com )
